Several persons have said that the accident involving a man in a wheel chair on Monday evening on the Millennium Highway was a disaster waiting to happen.

St. Lucia News Online (SNO) readers expressed sadness at the incident stating that it could have been avoided, but nothing was done to prevent it from happening.

One reader said, “This guy was a hazard on the Millennium Highway to many drivers, although he was cautioned by the authorities. It had to take a tourist visitor to give him a reflector vest after seen his condition while it was aired on news. He was very stubborn. Now today he finally get his death by negligence. May he rest in peace.”

Another reader said, the man who has been identified as Derek Eugene has been frequenting the area, and nothing was done to correct the situation. “Yes, I foresaw this happening. One time I was driving on that same road (in the night) and almost hit him. Sad though.”

“It was a matter of time, too many occasions I have seen him on the road at odd positions prone to be knocked. He takes chances as well…underestimating how quickly a vehicle might be moving….there’s that and the fact that where he commutes to where he calls home isn’t wheelchair user-friendly. So the smoothest travel is on the edge of the road. RIP. So sorry,” a reader also stated.

Eugene was reportedly killed when he was struck by a mini bus on Millennium Highway around 8 p.m.

The mini bus driver claims he was traveling to Castries when the one-legged man in the wheelchair left the yellow line and came into his path.

Investigations are continuing.
