A Canadian man died while hiking Gros Piton on Saturday, officials have confirmed.

Christopher Diachuk, 58, reached the summit where he passed away and was later confirmed dead.

However, reports are that Diachuk’s tour was not organized by the Soufriere Regional Development Foundation (SRDF), which is the official agency responsible for these tours.

The last recorded death at Gros Piton was on Sunday, May 3, 2015, when a US doctor Samyka Harris Edwin collapsed and never regained consciousness.

A post-mortem examination later confirmed that Edwin died as a result of heat stroke.

The SRDF had also said Edwin’s tour was not authorized. Further investigations revealed that the doctor and her husband were guided by an unauthorized group.

The SRDF is the only authorized body responsible for conducting tours under the Gros Piton Nature Trail and provides tours for groups of about four persons.

The Foundation also provides insurance liability for persons who participate in these tours.
