A fire gutted a facility at Victoria Hospital and destroyed several pieces of equipment in the biomedical section.
The incident happened around 4:35 p.m., according to the management of Victoria Hospital.
The Health Ministry in a statement on Friday said that hospital staff saw smoke emanating from the maintenance department and upon investigation, they discovered that a fire was taking place at the biomedical section.
“The fire service was quickly contacted while patients within the renal unit directly above the location of the fire were relocated,” the statement said.
They managed to contain the fire before it could spread to other buildings of the hospital.
Prime Minister Allen Chastanet and Economic Affairs Minister Guy Joseph were on the scene Thursday, to provide support, including the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Felix St. Hill.
Health Minister Mary Isaac, who was out of island on official business, has been appraised of the situation.
Executive Director of Victoria Hospital Jeanette Hughes stated that all is back to normal at the hospital.
Clients of the renal unit are being serviced in their original location.
Investigators are still trying to establish the exact cause of the fire.
